Garth Hawley,
and my Uncle, Robert Hawley.

I have purchased a livestock truck. It is my limousine.

Do not get worried I did not pay much for it. I hope you will not think that A.G. has gone plain loco mad in his older years. But to my surprise, what happiness I discovered getting behind the wheel and driving my livestock truck.

I also discovered something that has haunted me all my life. Most of you know the story of how my dad died. We were in his livestock truck hauling cattle when he had a heart attack and died. At the time of his death I was 8 years old.

When I was with my Dad riding in his livestock truck I was so proud, so happy. I thought he and I owned the world. And then it was taken away so suddenly. I guess I did not comprehend all that happened to me up until now.

My uncle Robert Hawley had a livestock truck, and when I was about ten, my cousin Dave took me for rides in it. Those rides sure brought back memories. One time we drove all the way to Milwaukee from Argyle and took in a Milwaukee Braves game. I really want to thank Dave for doing that. I guess I was the youngest Hawley at the time and everyone looked out for me.

All these years I've had in the back of my mind that I would purchase a Livestock or a limousine. Recently one became available, and it seemed the time had come. I do not think I will actually haul cattle with it, but I tell my workers you never know. If you are ever in Wisconsin or near Mt. Horeb stop in and I'll give you a ride in My Livestock Truck. It has taken away past pains.

Thanks for reading my story and please reply sometime at your convenience.

hawleyauctions@gmail.com

Breast Cancer Awareness

I was really amazed at the response and I want to thank everyone who donated on the Oct. 10th auction. Hang a "just married" sign on our brains! (This is Karen chiming in here.) We had a great time at our wedding, and now it's time to catch up on posting auction pix and info where folks expect to find them. If you want the latest pix and lists, you can always find them at:
auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/auctionlist.cgi?vuid=14940
If that link doesn't take you there, shorten it to:
auctionzip.com/
~~~ and type 6574 in the auctioneer ID window
(The above URLs are not automatic on this page; you have to copy the whole line of type and paste it into the address window of your browser. Tip: try the top one first. It's longer, but on my computer it's all on one line, a good sign when copying links from a line of type.
Computers are strange birds and sometimes choke on two lines - sort of like dogs and chicken bones.... If your computer is set for BIG TYPE, you might have to use the 2nd, shorter one.)
Here's what's coming up in August:
Sat., Aug 1, 2009 at 10:30 in Beaver Dam, WI
Sat., Aug 8, 2009 at 10:00 in Mount Horeb, WI
You can get details on
auctionzip.com
A COUPLE OF CHANGES June 11 and 14 AUCTIONS
The June 11th and 14th Auctions did not get posted at the time of advertising in the newspaper. That's when we went up to Stevens Point to attend the 17th Annual Wisconsin Grazing Conference. (See http://grassworks.org/.) Wow! Would you believe that when some people say "conventional farming," what they really mean is a kind of food production that has only existed for about 50 years? What happened to the family farm? Some of you who have tried it already know, but heart. The family farm is starting to make a name for itself as the wave of the future.
The factory farms that are now called "traditional" have little resemblance to what you or I might remember. Little resemblance to the Fisher Price layout with a variety of animals, and the feed for those animals growing on peaceful fields in the background. If we want that postcard back in real life, we'll have to have to work for it, and perhaps learn a thing or two in the process. MANAGED GRAZING is more like "what we grew up with," with the difference that we (with the help of researchers) have much more info about the benefits of crop rotation, knowing your animals, your land, and your customers personally; and paying attention to local foods.
So.... Watch for local foods at Hawley Auztions! Also watch our little
garden grow. Karen is determined to disguise some of the clutter
around here with some pretty stuff. We're both into the tasty stuff
too. Bring your garden overruns to the auction house, and we'll all
take home healthy loot!
Packing up before the snow
Dec. 2, 2008
It's hardly been a quiet week in Mount Horeb. OK, it's not my home town, but I live here. I've been busy hauling a variety of items to the auction center, and after the last auction of the year, coming up Dec 14, we will have lots more in January and February of '09.
The day after Thanksgiving, hired help was in short supply, and I had at least a truck and trailer load of household goods to pack and haul. Turns out I made the drive with Karen Zethmayr, the lady I will marry this coming summer. I think we were brought together by mutual passions for dancing, thoughtful living, and the conservation of our planet. She says she always wanted a part time dock loading job for the exercise. Little did she know.
Our Thanksgiving Friday trip had started days before with a call from Bill Holman, of Holman Realty, Highland, Wisconsin. He was selling a house for an elderly lady who needed help packing up things that would never fit into the place she was moving into. That's how it starts. Once more I'd said yes, and I was making the time to pack and haul and find new homes for things that had surrounded someone before a turning point.
We pulled up to the isolated ranch house in rural Iowa/Grant County territory, and the note on the door read: "Please bang on the door loud. I'm hard of hearing." Bill greeted us at the door and introduced us to a trim, perky lady in a red sweat suit. We carried out a big blue plastic hand for sitting on, and other less striking furniture. We stuffed boxes with lamps, tools, sound equipment, camping gear, and knick knacks. She grinned gamely at the idea of putting old fashioned lamps into huge decorative tin cans for protection. As we packed, we learned that she and her husband had moved here 5 years ago from Chicago. They didn't know anyone in the area, but they liked the house.
Then this past summer, her husband was killed in a car accident. No longer able to drive, she needed a smaller place close to town. I know what it is to be alone in a house where the one you love has been taken away. She'll make it. Though hard of hearing, she uses her bright eyes and lively expression to assure you that she wants to connect. Handing us a pile of newspapers to wrap a collection of little lighthouses, she mused, "well, it's not snowing yet! That's a real good thing."
I was happy to help her, though the cost of moving will surely be more than what money today's market will bring for these things. Sometimes at Hawley Auctions we run across top of the line antiques and collectibles, even big ticket items. Other times we just manage to match up folks who want decent things for a reasonable price with those who hope for some return on what they can no longer fit into their lives.
Have a safe and happy holiday.
